Guys: Whats the difference between putting your arms around a girls shoulders and a girls waist?

There's this guy I really like and while I was going through some pictures I noticed that in pictures of him with other girls he was putting his arm around their shoulders and in his picture with me he put his arm around my waist. What is the difference to you?
